Eva woke to find the bed empty. She saw Oliver standing at the window, gazing out. He hadn’t heard her stir, and she drank in the sight of him, the pale moonlight illuminating the golden skin of his broad shoulders and back, and shining in his thick dark hair.

He had a beautiful body – lean, muscular and powerful. It seemed incredible that this magnificent man had been her lover – her first. But there was something so dejected in his posture, and when he laid his forehead against the windowpane and closed his eyes, the gesture seemed remorseful.

‘Oliver?’ she called softly.

He turned at the sound of his name, and her heart lurched at the bleak expression on his face. He quickly replaced it with a weak smile that didn’t erase the haunted look in his eyes.

She sat up, pushing her hair back from her face and trying to wake up properly. ‘What’s wrong? Come back to bed.’ She held out her hand to him, but he closed his eyes as though the sight pained him.

Alarmed by his attitude, Eva pulled the sheet around her and got out of bed, dread clawing at her stomach. Clutching the sheet to her chest, she went over to him.

She touched his shoulder gently, so he turned to look at her. But the despair she saw in his eyes sent a chill through her. ‘What’s the matter?’

‘Nothing. I just couldn’t get to sleep. Go back to bed.’

She swallowed hard. ‘Are you sorry?’

‘Sorry?’ He looked at her blankly.

‘About … what happened between us?’

His eyes raked over her face, as if he was deciding how to answer. ‘I’m sorry I didn’t believe you,’ he said finally.

‘Oh.’ She blushed and dropped her eyes, feeling very gauche. He hadn’t expected her to be a virgin. Did he regret being her first? If he’d known, would he have stopped himself? Either way, she was aware he hadn’t got what he’d bargained for.

‘You were expecting me to be much more experienced,’ she said gruffly, trying to play down her embarrassment. ‘I must have been quite a letdown.’

Oliver jerked back as if she’d struck him. ‘A letdown?’ he breathed, frowning at her. ‘Eva, have you no idea what you do to me? How amazing last night was?’

She blushed under the intensity of his gaze.

‘No, I suppose you don’t.’

‘You—you weren’t disappointed?’

‘Far from it.’ The tenderness in his deep, resonant voice sent shivers up Eva’s spine, and when he placed a hand on her cheek, urging her to look at him, she saw an echoing warmth in his eyes that took her breath away. ‘Eva, you were incredible – sexy and passionate, and responsive – more than any man could hope for in his wildest fantasies.’

‘That’s quite a compliment, considering all the wild fantasies you must have heard about me.’ She just wanted to jolt him out of the black mood he seemed to be in, but she immediately regretted her flippancy when she saw the pained look in his eyes.

‘Don’t.’ He dropped his hand from her face and turned back to the window.
